Despite terror bombings and an earthquake exceeding 6.0 on the Richter scale, it was my turn to rock the city of Delhi the following day when duty called for a business trip. Pre-warned by others of the so called “Eve Teasing” where male strangers eagerly take the opportunity to grope women on crowded streets, public transportation, restaurants etc, I was somewhat anxious about my first visit to the capital of India. To my surprise and horror, I found myself being pinched in the ass on the dance floor of a nightclub packed with IT dudes.
Neighbourhood Watch
1 SepRadiant heat, traffic chaos, pollution, crowds and lack of pedestrian sidewalks easily fall within the frames of personal ill-being and are undoubtedly to blame for my rare appearances outside the residential gates. However, as most of my fellow country lads were in their homes celebrating one of Hinduism’s most significant Gods, Ganesha to the similar extent of Christians jubilating Christmas, I took the opportunity to sneak out for what I believed would be a rather quiet and eventless stroll.
On the contrary of what I had presumed the neighbourhood streets and areas were semi-occupied by fruit vendors, playing children, women hand-washing clothes and men harvesting rice fields in such a colourful and admirable fashion of which were not earlier noticeable to my eyes due to the hustle and bustle of traffic.
Pieces of Heaven
22 JulREJECTION is one cold shouldered bitch, hitting you in the face when least expected. After 8 weeks of anxiously waiting for word regarding my visa extension (which expired in May), a disappointed one surfaced. It seems that the Bureaucrats of India do not fully comprehend the term of “Volunteering” therefore has asked me to leave by latest August next month as I do not contribute to the economical growth by paying income tax.
Firstly, how can one pay income tax when there is no salary acquired?
Secondly, does assisting a charitable organisation in the process of empowering India’s forth-coming generation in life skills count as nothing?
Luckily, I was quickly distracted to a better mood when I received 2 pieces of heaven courtesy of a special someone.
Breaking the (Musical) Law
5 JulBeing of Asian descent, karaoke and photo op are the cornerstones of my religion.
Therefore, I was in total bliss when encouraged to perform in a rather gloomy and empty sports bar the other night.
I had so much fun that I did not even notice the multiple people leaving the bar during my singing.
Breakfast at Taj
27 JunSundays are best spent in the garden of a five star hotel, pondering over what spread to have on your breakfast sandwich..

Trying my very first oyster..

Seconds before spitting out my first chunk of oyster

Followed by numerous plates of desserts in order to sooth my taste buds

Finished off with some post-breakfast exercises

The Magic of Kicking Ball
24 JunAs a Dream A Dream volunteer, I had the pleasure of returning to the sports programme yesterday, restarting after the two months of summer vacation. Arriving at the school field, I am greeted by a crowd of smiley children some dressed in white and brown school uniforms while others in red football kits, shouting PATSI PATSI and pushing one another aside in the attempt to shake my hand.
As the Coach and the Coordinators enter the field, the children eagerly form a straight line and await instructions for the day’s exercises. Minutes later cones and footballs are placed on the field for the children to delve into, of which they do with much excitement and energy.
Running along and passing the ball around, I cannot escape to notice the happiness and bliss shared among the children and adults on the pitch.
In the enjoyment of the game it is evident to observe that for one moment the hardship of the reality of these children’s lives, have been momentarily forgotten. Their excitement for the game knows no barriers, gender or otherwise. It is clear to see that these children thrive in this environment where the use of concentration and self discipline is highly encouraged. The self esteem these children gain from these experiences are invaluable for their future development and successes in life.
Suddenly the football exercises are being interrupted by the cloudburst of rain, having children and adults seeking shelter under the school building. Safe from the rain, we position ourselves in a circle sharing thoughts and experiences from today’s football activities whilst snacks are being distributed. Shortly after the sharing and cooling down time we all exchange goodbyes and see you laters.
Once in my car, I find myself smiling throughout the whole journey back home.
Sweating for a Cause
7 JunJammed amid 9000+ sweaty and smelly armpits with legs pulsating in immense pain, watery eyes, dry mouth and aching bladder, there is no other place I would rather be.
1 hour, 15 minutes, 5 seconds and 10km later, I make it through the finish line with staggering limbs and a drenching t-shirt. I am however damn proud that I did not give up during the race and that the sponsor money raised will help less privileged children for a better future.
Perhaps for the next race, I should physically prepare and properly train prior to D-day, hopefully minimising the damages as I have barely been able to walk up neither down stairs for the last couple of days.
